Anne Hunter Gipson entered life on January 27, 1941, at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, GA. She was the second of five children born to the late John Andrew and Frances Steele Hunter. She attended elementary school in Atlanta and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in 1959. She earned her associate degree from Morristown Jr. College in Tennessee, which was an African American higher education institution located in Morristown, the seat of Hamblen County, Tennessee.

Anne accepted Christ in 1953 at Wheat Street Baptist Church, a historic black Baptist church in Atlanta, under the pastorage of the late Rev. William Holmes Borders. Ann had a special bond with Pastor Borders and served on the usher board. As a member, she learned sign language to interpret the sermon, prayers, and songs on Sunday morning for the non-hearing population. Rev. Borders would always acknowledge Anne for the kind and gentle way she took care of Mrs. Borders during her recovery from a horrific accident.

Anne visited California in the late sixties and loved it. She made a decision that changed her life forever. She decided to make California her home where she later met the love of her life, Deacon Leon Gipson and they joined in holy matrimony on June 30, 1971. They raised a son, daughter and helped raise six God children.

Anne and Leon first became members of the Saint Andrews African Methodist Episcopal church under Pastor Philip Cousin, Jr., in Sacramento, CA and is now a California Historical Landmark. During the early 1990s, they moved to New Testament Baptist church under the pastorage of Rev. C. M. Cummings where she served as a deaconess for ten years.

Anne was a custodian in the Environmental Services Department at the University of California, Davis. She retired from the Sacramento location after 25 years of tireless service. She would go on to take some classes at Sacramento City Jr. College to continue her learning process and to stay busy.

Anne and Leon loved to travel to Jamaica and Mexico with those countries being two of their favorite places to visit. They were also cruise connoisseurs. During their travels, Leon would always make sure they made time to visit Atlanta to connect with family and friends in that area.

Crocheting, sewing, and cake baking filled her years after retirement. Family and friends who were blessed enough to get a blanket, hat, scarf, baby sweater or a piece made by her felt the love and time she spent and often marveled at the workmanship. It was also said to taste a cake by Anne was like a 'little bit of Heaven in your mouth.'

Anne and Leon joined Greater St. Stephen Baptist Church (New Direction Christian Center) under Dr. Anthony Wallace, Sr. Pastor in March 1997. As charter members, they started the church's first praise team ministry. During her 26 years at New Direction, she served in numerous capacities. She was a servant on the deaconess board, the usher board, the mother's board, the church's Board of Directors. She also started the culinary ministry along with Sister Yvonne Watts and was part of fundraising activities as well. She loved to sing and dance praises unto the Lord.

Along with her many church duties, she was able to carve out some time to work in her community. She was on the church's committee to help get Dave Jones and Darryl Steinberg elected to be city councilmember and mayor, respectively. Her community services also consisted of working to get Kevin Johnson elected as mayor. She was an integral part of the 'Eat 5 A Day and Be Active' committee and worked feeding the homeless before she became ill.

She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Deacon Leon Gipson, son John Andrew Gipson (Anissa Walker), daughter Deion Sanders, seven grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and several God children.  She also leaves siblings Jonella Hunter Collier, Larry F. Hunter, and Sonja Hunter Mason (Walter) all from Atlanta including many friends and extended family members who will celebrate the life of Anne Hunter 'nee' Gipson.

Anne gained her wings on December 23, 2023, and will be missed by everyone she met.
