Honoring and Celebrating
THE LIFE OF CORNELIUS JOSHUA WESTBROOK
Sunrise: 11-15-1948 Sunset: 05-19-2023
Cornelius Joshua Westbrook was born on November 15,1948, to the union of Burnist Westbrook, Sr. and Wilhelmina Kirtman in Oakland, California. Cornelius was the fifth born of seven children to this union. Cornelius attended Lafayette and Franklin Elementary Schools, Roosevelt Junior High School, Oakland High School and Laney College. He graduated High School in June of 1967 and completed all his education as a child in the Oakland Unified School District. While in attendance in High School Cornelius received Block Letter AthleticAwards for Football in 1965 and for Football Manager in 1966. On October 4, 1967, Cornelius received a Certificate of Completion from the Market Training Institute for successfully completing a course of instruction in Self-Service Cashiering. On June 19, 1970, Mt Zion Missionary Baptist Church awarded Cornelius for his participation in the Social Service Youth Program Basketball League.
Cornelius accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at the Mt Zion MB Church under the leadership of Pastor W.A. Holly. He served as a member of many organizations at his church including singing in and directing the choir, serving on the Usher Board, serving as Youth Advisor, just to name a few. In the early 1970's for over a decade Cornelius served as the Secretary for the Fraternal Order of the American Woodman. He was a supporter of the Oakland Blood Bank and a regular donor. Cornelius' favorite music was Gospel but he loved all music genres, he liked to DJ at family events and share his love of music with family and friends (he had quite a collection). He had a few hobbies he loved, reading and collecting comic books, gardening, fishing, baking, cooking/BAR B CUE'ing, making homemade Ice Cream and repairing anything that was broken. Yes, you could call him a jack of all trades, but he was pretty much the master of them all!
Cornelius met the love of his life, Glenda Marie Livingston in Oakland 1977 and they were married 6-27-1981 and became a blessed blended family of 5. They raised three children together, Lonnell, John L and Shontanell. Cornelius and Glenda would have celebrated their 42nd Wedding Anniversary this month. The family relocated to El Sobrante, California, joined Elisabeth MB Church under the leadership of Pastor JL Johnson and after 6 years moved to Sacramento, California, where they joined the Mt Calvary MB Church under the leadership of Dr. Bryant C. Wyatt. Cornelius was appointed Head Deacon and faithfully served on the Deacon Board, Male Chorus and Men's Ministry until his health began to fail. Cornelius served as Intercessor on the Prayer Everywhere National Prayer Call for many years under the leadership of Pastor Bishop Sean Teal of Chattanooga, TN., now, Oakland, California, until his health began to further decline this past few months. Cornelius' (and Glenda's) compassion and love for children allowed them the opportunity to give back to their community by becoming loving Foster Parents for more than 10 years for the Sacramento County Child Protective Services and Private Foster Agencies.
Cornelius was employed with Pitney Bowes, the Postage Meter Company as a field Service Technician for 27 years, after which he enjoyed serving as a Security Guard for several years prior to retiring to Fishing the Delta which was their second home away from home.
