Donald Lynwood Routt was born in Dallas, Texas on November 8, 1939 to the union of James and Mattie Routt. Don
was the youngest of six children and was affectionately referred to by his family as Papa D. He passed away surrounded

by loved ones, leaving behind a legacy cherished by family and friends alike.

At the age of two, Don's family followed the great migration and moved to Sacramento, CA, before settling in San
Francisco's Bayview District. Don's upbringing included schooling at Bret Harte Elementary, Portola Jr. High, and
James Lick High School. His father, James Routt, a Preacher and Great Dane trainer, instilled in him a love for Christ
and animals at an early age.
Growing up in a close-knit family, Don found solace and friendship in his siblings, cousins and extended relatives. His
career began as an apprentice meat cutter, but his passion for classic cars led him to work as a gas station attendant,
where he further developed his expertise in automobiles.
In 1962, Don married his beloved Bernice Goudeau. The following year, he embarked on a career milestone as a
longshoreman on the San Francisco waterfront. Throughout the decade, he welcomed three children into the world:
Kelvin, Valerie, and Stacey. Don consistently showed his strong work ethic and steadfast commitment to his family.
Don continued to work on passion projects during his time as a longshoreman. He pursued entrepreneurial ventures
alongside his brother Tommy in the 1970s. Together, they established "Don's House of Style'', a successful leather and
suede shop in the vibrant Fillmore district. The entrepreneurial spirit also led them to open a local ice cream parlor,
renowned for its signature black ice cream, a blend featuring pure vanilla bean.
Throughout his life, Don's love for cars remained a defining characteristic. He enjoyed working on cars, attending car
shows, and participating in races. Retirement from the waterfront in 1993 provided him more time to indulge in his
automotive passions and share his knowledge with younger generations: his son, nephews, and grandchildren. In 1994
(div. 2004) he married Mary L. Smith and the pair embraced their role as grandparents. Don was celebrated as the
heart of every gathering, taking pride in never skipping a family event. Whether it was a family reunion, barbecue,
wedding, or birthday party, Don could often be spotted at the spades table or slamming down some dominos or
tearing up the dance floor. Don appreciated a good meal and was known for his tacos and signature chili.
In 2010, he found companionship with Joanne Brown, also known as Fancy, who became a significant presence in his
life. Fancy became a central figure in his family. Together, they created many cherished memories.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, and sister, but his impact lives on through those he leaves
behind. He is fondly remembered by his significant other Joanne, brother Tommy (Lessie), children Kelvin (Belinda),
Valerie, Stacey, eleven grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and a wide circle of family and
friends.
Papa D will always be cherished for his humor, his commitment to family, and his enduring passion for cars. His

legacy continues to thrive in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
