Nakia Christina LaBat was born on July 3, 1975, to Nathaniel Christopher and Merry Kate (Woodson) LaBat; she was the fourth child of this union. As a baby, Nakia was a beautiful, lifelike doll, with such a joyous disposition that her siblings, many cousins, and friends would often contend with one another, as to who would bathe and dress her! Nakia attended Hope Academy Christian School, where she maintained lifelong friendships and relationships. After which, she was enrolled in Golden Gate Academy, until the eleventh grade. In her twelfth year, she requested to attend a public school, Skyline High, where she graduated.

Nakia's formidable years were spent blossoming and worshipping with Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church, in Oakland, CA, under the Pastorate of the late, Reverend Arlee Hightower. She later united with Cornerstone MBC, in Oakland, under the leadership of the late, Reverend Lester Lee Cannon, where she was baptized. Cornerstone is a very welcoming, close-knit, and loving church. For Nakia, it was much more than that, it was an extended family. Many of her most memorable occasions were spent there with her friends because she was very supportive and dedicated to the ministry. Nakia flourished in her faith and made a lifelong commitment to Christ, declaring Him her Savior. Nakia was a member of the Youth and Young Adult Choir, and the Children's Ministry and was later employed as a staff member of Cornerstone's Day Care. She had an excellent reputation with the children and parents alike and was known to be firm, loving, and fair. Nakia was so exceptional with children that she had an integral role in helping to raise her nieces, nephews, and many children in the community.

Nakia attended and later accepted a position at Merritt College's Bursar's (business) office. She was very well-liked by the staff and students. Nakia loved taking pictures and having her picture taken, was very stylish, sociable, and loved to laugh! Her laugh was like no other-she had an AWESOME, contagious, deep-bellied, high-pitched laugh! She also had a heart of gold, was extremely generous, and truly enjoyed helping those in need. "Kiki," as most people called her, often made very expensive care packages for the homeless that included sleeping bags, clothing, and top-shelf food and snacks. Nakia battled Juvenile Diabetes since her childhood. The strength, courage, and wisdom she displayed in the face of obstacles were the hallmarks of her personality, to which she persevered, and her spirit remained triumphant. Numerous family members and friends kept her in prayer, encouraged, and visited her when she had hospital stays.

We will be forever grateful to you ALL for the love, time, and generosity you have shown over the years. Nakia finished her course on March 2, 2023. The faithful servant is healed and has gone up higher, to be with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
