Rickey Terron Boyland was born in Memphis, Tennessee on February 4, 1957, to John Lee Boyland and Prudence Patricia (Webber) Boyland.  Rickey was the second eldest of four children.  He moved, along with his family, from Memphis to the Los Angeles area in the mid-1960s.

Rickey began elementary school in Memphis, and continued elementary, middle, and high school in Los Angeles, California.  He graduated from John C. Fremont High School in 1975.  After high school, Rickey moved to Stockton in Northern California where he graduated from University of the Pacific (UOP) in 1979.  He later moved to nearby Sacramento and obtained his Masters of Business Administration in 1984 from California State University, Sacramento.

While in graduate school, Rickey went to work for the State of California.  Most of his State career was at the Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA) where he ultimately met his wife, Regena.  Rickey worked for DCA as an Information Systems Analyst and retired in 2017 after working for over 30 years.

Rickey had a very warm and caring heart and was passionate about helping others.  This is evident by his selfless commitment and dedication to community service work.  Rickey joined Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. while attending UOP and remained very active in various roles, such as mentoring young men through the Alpha Academy, for over 40 years.  In addition, Rickey was the first President of the Pacific Black Alumni Club at UOP.  Rickey strongly advocated for the recruitment and retention of black students at UOP and had remained active up until recent months.

Rickey had several talents and interests, including photography, for which he was recognized on numerous occasions: he was a featured photo artist at Sacramento City College, he captured special photographic moments of individuals and at various events, created a bio-video for a local artist, and authored a photo book highlighting the history of the Oak Park neighborhood in Sacramento.  Rickey also enjoyed listening to music, especially jazz; traveling; reading; writing poetry; and fishing.

Rickey loved people.  He was friendly to everyone, laughed quickly, and had a witty sense of humor.  When he was in one of his quirky moods, watch out! Rickey's care-free, happy-go-lucky, laugh-out-loud mannerisms had a way of bringing a smile to those who came into his presence.  He would find a way to say or do something to make you laugh; that was one of the things he enjoyed.

Rickey was very committed to his family and loved them dearly. The love Rickey shared will live in our hearts forever.  Rickey is preceded in death by his parents, John Lee Boyland (1987) and Prudence P. Boyland (2018).  Rickey leaves behind to cherish his memories, his wife Regena Boyland; step daughters Natacia Caton & Kiana Caton; siblings Melody Scott (Conwell), Devincea Boyland (Tammie), and Prudence V. Boyland; nieces & nephews Menika, Amber, Tianna, Jessica, Brandyce, Brett, Branden, Brittan, Breanna, Eddie, Emiliah, Eimauri, Mattaio Lee, Johnny Quest, Jade Lashell, Cyniah Marie, Aiden, Ashtyn, and Amaris; and a host of other family and friends.  Rickey will be sorely missed by those who had the privilege of knowing him.
