CELEBRATING THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF

VERNON C. JACKSON

Vernon C. Jackson peacefully transitioned from grace to glory surrounded by his faithful daughters on January 28, 2022. As the family Patriarch, he was affectionately known to his daughters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren as Daddy, Papa and Popsicle.

Vernon was born on December 15, 1927 in Fresno, CA. His parents, William and Mary Belle, welcomed their son into their growing family. The Jackson family included five brothers and four sisters. Growing up in a family of nine, he had several nicknames: Vern, Tom and Dobie.

As a child, Vernon was curious and had a passion for learning. He loved to share what he discovered with others. This love for learning continued into his high school and college years. Vernon attended Edison High School in Fresno, CA where he was a straight A student and excelled in track and field; receiving numerous medals and setting records. He graduated early at the age of 16 and was the Valedictorian for his high school class. His college years were distinguished by earning Bachelor's Degrees from the University of San Francisco and the Los Angeles College of Applied Arts and Science. Vernon received Master's Degrees in Rehabilitation Counseling from the Los Angeles College of Applied Arts and Science and in Correctional Counseling from Pepperdine University.

His military service began in 1945 when he enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard. During his military service, Vernon served as a Hospital Corpsman-Petty Officer II.

Faith, family and travel were central throughout his lifetime. During his military service, he resided in Los Angeles and began attending Macedonia Baptist Church where he met his future wife, Gladys Lewis. They were married on February 18, 1951, to this union were born five children: Michaele (d. 2005), Joseph (d. 1954), DeAnna, La Vita and Rhonette. As a result of Vernon's military career, he became an avid world traveler. He shared his love for travel with his family as they traveled extensively together to Canada, Mexico, Dominican Republic and throughout the United States.

The couple started attending Apostolic Faith Home Assembly in Los Angeles, CA, pastored by the late Bishop Frank R. Bowdan. While at the Home Assembly, they deepened their faith and actively served in the church. Vernon served as a Deacon, Sunday School teacher and counselor at Home Assembly and later at Peace Apostolic Church, pastored by the late Bishop Howard Swancy. For 40 years, Vernon was an instructor at Aenon Bible College where he was awarded a Honorary Doctor of Divinity in 1998.

Vernon served as a Los Angeles County Deputy Probation officer. He remained in this position for 11 years until his appointment to Federal Probation Officer with the U.S. Courts. After 20 years of service, he retired in 1987.

In 2005, Vernon moved to Sacramento and attended Christ Temple Apostolic Church, pastored by District Elder Charles Warner. While at the church, he was a Board Member, counselor and taught Bible classes. Vernon also participated in the Sacramento Area Church Congregations Together, a non-denominational community organization addressing local issues. Vernon also served as a Foster Grandparent at the Sacramento County Juvenile Hall and at William Daylor High School. He was honored by the Elk Grove School District for his more than eight years of volunteer services to at risk youth.

Vernon is preceded in death by his parents, William and Mary Belle Jackson and siblings: Edna Reid, David Jackson, Carrie Fountaine, Florence Holmes, Gerard Jackson, Richard Jackson and Albert Jackson, his wife, Gladys Jackson, and daughter, Michaele Hogan.

He is survived by his baby sister, Barbara Mae Williams, his three lovingly devoted daughters: DeAnna (Jerry) Parker; La Vita (Solomon Jr.) Turner; and Rhonette Jackson. Also left to cherish Vernon's memory and honor his legacy are six grandchildren; Dereck (Anny) Hogan, Keanon Jackson, Tahra Tibbs, Miya Jackson, Jennifer Gordon and Kyle Hogan; and four bonus grandchildren, Solomon Turner III, Jasmine Turner-Bond, Micah Turner and Jade Turner- Bond; eight great-grandchildren, Nia, Jayden, Hannah, Nadiya, Elijah J., Londyn, Kobe and Nenah; and two bonus great-grandchildren, Elijah G. and Peregrine; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
